Do younger drivers have different requirements?

Most young people can’t wait to finally get their driver’s license. It’s a rite of passage, and Florence, KY young people are suddenly more independent. But young people are also involved in a comparatively larger number of accidents than older drivers. Kentucky has special rules to try to cut down on those crashes.

Graduated Driver Licensing Program

If individuals 18 or over are obtaining a driver’s license for the first time, they don’t need to participate in this program. Anyone 16 or 17 who is working for a driver’s license must follow the rules of the Graduated Driver Licensing Program.

Learner’s Permit

Minors need the signature of a parent or legal guardian to get a learner’s permit. That parent or guardian is claiming responsibility for the minor and can withdraw consent at any time. Teens must also pass the vision and written tests to qualify. Those with a learner’s permit cannot drive alone and have other restrictions, such as what times they are allowed to drive. This phase must last at least six months.

6-Month Intermediary Period

After 180 days, teens can sign up to take the road skills test. When signing up for the driving test, applicants need to provide proof of insurance and a driving log showing at least 60 hours of practice driving. Anyone with an intermediate license can drive alone but can only drive one underage passenger and must not have drugs or alcohol in their system while driving. If someone with an intermediate license gets a ticket, the 180-day wait before getting a full license starts over.

Auto Insurance: The Minimum Requirement

In the state of Kentucky, all vehicle owners must have at least an auto liability insurance policy in place that includes uninsured motorist coverage. It is imperative that all drivers have this minimum amount of auto insurance in place to ensure they will not lose their driver’s license if they are caught without it.

Other Types of Auto Insurance

Collision insurance will help pay for damage to your vehicle and another person’s vehicle if you collide. This also helps out if you collide with a stationary object.

Comprehensive insurance will help pay for your vehicle if it is damaged, or even destroyed, by some sort of natural disaster or a fire. This also applies if your vehicle is damaged by vandalism. Comprehensive insurance will also help you replace your vehicle if it is stolen.
